Gymnastics score calculator

A gymnastics score is the start value minus deductions. Judges begin from the routine's start value, subtract execution deductions for errors in form, landings and artistry, then subtract any neutral deductions such as out of bounds.

Pick a level and event, tap the deductions you saw, and the calculator does the subtraction. It covers USAG Development Program Levels 1 to 10 and Xcel Bronze to Diamond.

Example: Level 4 beam with two sample deductions. Change anything to start your own.

Event

Default for Level 4 balance beam: 10.00.

Compulsory level: every event starts from 10.0.

How is a gymnastics score calculated?

  1. Start value. The score the routine begins from. At compulsory Levels 1 to 5 it is 10.0 on every event. At optional levels it depends on the routine.
  2. Execution deductions. Tenths taken for errors such as bent knees, balance checks, steps on landing and falls.
  3. Neutral deductions. Taken off the final score for things like going out of bounds on floor or a time violation.

Final score = start value − execution deductions − neutral deductions. A score cannot go below 0, and no event score is above 10.0.

Compulsory vs optional start values

Compulsory levels (Levels 1 to 5). Every gymnast performs the same prescribed routine, and every event starts from 10.0.

Optional levels (Levels 6 to 10). The routine is built by the coach, so the start value depends on what is in it. Under the 2026-30 USAG code, when the routine meets every special requirement and value part, bars, beam and floor start from 10.0 at Levels 6 and 7, 9.80 at Level 8, 9.50 at Level 9 and 9.20 at Level 10. From there, Composition Credit adds up to 0.20 (Levels 8 and 9) or 0.30 (Level 10), and bonus adds up to 0.30 (Level 9) or 0.50 (Level 10), so every level can still reach 10.0. Each missing special requirement costs 0.50, and at Levels 6 to 9 each restricted element (a skill above the level's difficulty limit) also costs 0.50. At Levels 8 to 10 the vault start value comes from the vault chart.

Xcel. Every Xcel routine is optional. The table shows the start value when the routine meets its requirements. On vault, Xcel Bronze is 9.0 or 10.0 depending on the mat stack option, and Platinum and Diamond vault start values vary with the vault performed.

Start values for optional levels assume every requirement is met. Official values come from the code your meet is judged under: USA Gymnastics — Rules & Policies, FIG Code of Points.

Common deductions and their typical values

Most small form errors are typically 0.10 each. A fall is typically 0.50. For what each deduction means, which skills get it and drills to fix it, see the gymnastics deductions list.

Frequently asked questions

How is a gymnastics score calculated?
A gymnastics score is the start value minus deductions. Judges begin from the routine's start value, subtract execution deductions for form, landing and artistry errors, then subtract any neutral deductions such as out of bounds or time. The score cannot go below 0.000.
What is a start value in gymnastics?
The start value is the score a routine begins from before any deductions. At USAG compulsory Levels 1 to 5 it is 10.0 on every event. At optional levels it depends on the routine: Levels 6 to 8 start from 10.0 when every special requirement and value part is met, and Levels 9 and 10 have a base of 9.5 that bonus can raise.
How much is a fall in gymnastics?
A fall is typically a 0.50 deduction, the largest single execution deduction in Stickd's deduction list. Small form errors such as bent knees or flexed feet are typically 0.10 each.
How is an all-around score calculated?
The all-around score is the sum of a gymnast's four event scores: vault, bars, beam and floor. With a 10.0 maximum on each event, the highest possible all-around total is 40.0.
Is this calculator's score the official score?
No. The deduction values here are typical values used as a guide, and judges scale each deduction to what they see. The official score is always the judges' score. Use the calculator to understand where tenths go and to practice between meets.
