Composition Credit in Gymnastics (Levels 8–10): Why a Clean Routine Can Start Below 10.0

October 16, 2026·4 min read

At USA Gymnastics Levels 8–10, meeting the value-part and Special Requirement rules doesn’t get a routine to 10.0. Per the 2026–30 event charts (bars), that base Start Value is 9.80 at Level 8, 9.50 at Level 9 and 9.20 at Level 10. The rest has to be earned. Level 8 needs Composition Credit (+0.20). Level 9 needs Composition Credit (+0.20) plus up to 0.30 Bonus. Level 10 needs Composition Credit (+0.30) plus up to 0.50 Bonus.

What Composition Credit is

Composition Credit rewards how a routine is built, not just which skills are in it. Examples are connecting certain skills directly or finishing with a harder dismount. The Gymnastics Guide gives this Level 8 bars example: a B+B direct connection is worth +0.10, and a B dismount (or B+A dismount) is worth +0.10. Each event has its own list, so ask the coach for your gymnast’s.

Why “clean” isn’t the same as “full Start Value”

Hypothetical: a Level 9 bar routine hits every skill with great form, but it doesn’t include the connection that earns Composition Credit. It starts at 9.70 instead of 10.0, and execution deductions come after that. Nobody made a mistake you could see. The routine just wasn’t built to earn those tenths.

How it fits with Value Parts and Special Requirements

A missing value part (A 0.10 / B 0.30 / C 0.50) or a missing Special Requirement (0.50 each) comes off first. Composition Credit and Bonus are how Levels 8–10 climb back to 10.0. See our Value Parts and Special Requirements guides.

After the meet

A good question for the coach is “Did the routine get its full Composition Credit?” If you film where your meet allows, practice video can show whether a connection was direct.

FAQ

Why does Level 10 start at 9.20?
That's the Start Value with value parts and SRs met. Composition Credit (+0.30) and up to 0.50 Bonus make up the rest.
Do Levels 6–7 have Composition Credit?
No. Per the charts, they aren't eligible for Bonus or CC.
Is Composition Credit the same as Bonus?
No. They're separate, and Levels 9–10 need both for a 10.0 Start Value.
