What’s New in the 2026–30 USAG Optional Code of Points (A Parent Briefing)

May 29, 2026·Updated September 2026·6 min read

A new optional cycle changes how optional routines are constructed and evaluated. Parents do not need the full PDF — but they do need a clear sense of what may change score conversations this season, what usually stays familiar from the stands, and what to ask the coach before routines lock in.

None of this is about second-guessing judges. The official score on meet day is the official score. Knowing the current rules is how coaches prepare routines and how parents ask useful questions.

Why parents are hearing about a new Code of Points now

USA Gymnastics Development Program Optional rules run in multi-year cycles. The 2026–30 USAG Optional Code of Points applies for the new season, with an effective date of August 1, 2026.

If your gymnast competes optional levels commonly discussed as Levels 6–10, coaches may revisit skill values, special requirements, and connection value before locking routines. That is normal for a cycle change — not a sign that last season’s hard work “doesn’t count.”

For plain-English deduction literacy that still applies while rules update, see gymnastics deductions for parents and the glossary.

What typically changes in a new optional cycle (categories — not an invented checklist)

Parents do not need a fabricated “top 10 changes” list. Cycle updates usually affect conversations in these categories. Exact line items belong in the official USAG Optional Code of Points PDF and in your coach’s season plan.

Difficulty / composition conversations

Coaches may re-check:

  • Which skills carry which difficulty values this cycle
  • Special requirements for the level
  • Connection value and how routines are built for Start Value

If Start Value expectations shift for your gymnast’s planned routine, scores can look different even when execution “looks the same” from the stands. Ask the coach whether composition — not just form — is part of the early-season focus.

Execution and deduction emphasis coaches may flag

Execution standards (form, landings, amplitude, artistry, etc.) remain central every season. A new cycle can change emphasis or how certain faults are described in the rulebook. Parents should not invent tenths from memory. Use shared language from Stickd’s glossary (step, hop, deep squat, fall, form faults), then confirm official values with the coach and the current PDF.

What usually does not change for parents watching meets

  • You still watch Start Value (the ceiling) and deductions (what comes off) — see How to read a meet score and the existing deductions primer.
  • Official meet scores remain the judges’ call.
  • Your job as a parent is still literacy and coach partnership — not sideline coaching.

Compulsory Levels 1–5

Compulsory routines are unchanged for 2026–27 (prescribed routines; Start Value is 10.0, with the exception of the Level 5 bars alternate dismount at 9.50). However, USA Gymnastics issued July 2026 replacement pages with rule updates — for example, the Level 2 backward-roll deduction dropped from 0.60 to 0.30, and there are new rules on music failure and mobility. See our compulsory scoring guide for details.

Xcel

The Xcel Code of Points was extended through 2028, with Sapphire described as a growing division opportunity rather than a wholesale rules rewrite for the season. Confirm with your coach for your gymnast’s division.

Elite / FIG

Families competing under FIG rules are on the 2025–2028 cycle separately (including notes on floor music, difficulty value updates, artistry evaluation, and vault incentives). Treat those as FIG-facing; ask the coach which code your gymnast actually competes under.

Questions to ask your coach before the season

  1. Which Code of Points and level does my gymnast compete under this season?
  2. For optional athletes: what composition or Start Value changes should our family expect vs. last season?
  3. Which 1–2 execution themes (landings, form, amplitude, artistry) are priorities for your gymnast early in the season?
  4. How should we use practice video at home without coaching from the bleachers?
  5. Where should we look for official USAG updates if we want the primary source?

Bring questions, not a second scoring system.

How Stickd relates to the 2026–30 COP

Stickd’s AI scoring is updated for the 2026–30 USAG Optional Code of Points. The analysis applies the current cycle for each program (new optional COP for Levels 6–10 as applicable, plus unchanged compulsory/Xcel framing and FIG 2025–2028 for elite contexts).

When a parent uploads practice or meet video, Stickd surfaces estimated Start Value / execution-related scoring, deduction labels, and suggested drills for coach discussion. That is training literacy — not official judging.

As routines update for the new cycle, use Stickd to review practice videos and see which deductions still show up — then align drills with your coach’s plan.

Where to read the official rules

  • Prefer official USA Gymnastics Development Program / Optional Code of Points materials for authoritative text (Rules & Policies / COP PDFs as published by USAG for the current season).
  • If a blog summary and the official PDF disagree, the official PDF and your coach win.
  • Stickd educational pages (glossary, blog) are parent translators — not substitutes for the rulebook.

Parents unsure about a specific tenth or requirement should ask the coach or check the official PDF rather than relying on memory or social media summaries.

FAQ

When does the 2026–30 USAG Optional Code of Points take effect?
August 1, 2026, for the 2026–30 Development Program Optional Code of Points. Confirm the effective date on official USAG publications for your gymnast's program if you need the primary source.
Do parents need to relearn how meet scores work?
No. The parent model stays the same: Start Value (the ceiling) minus deductions, plus any separate penalties under that code. What may change is how optional routines are built and which faults coaches emphasize.
Will my gymnast's scores look different under the new Code of Points?
They might — especially if Start Value construction or emphasis on certain execution standards shifts. That doesn't automatically mean your gymnast got worse. Ask the coach whether composition, execution, or both are driving early-season score conversations.
Where can parents find official USAG rule updates?
Official USA Gymnastics publications for the Development Program Optional Code of Points and related Rules & Policies. Your gym or coach should point families to the documents they're training under. Blog summaries, including Stickd's, are secondary.
Does Stickd score routines using the new Code of Points?
Yes. Stickd scoring is updated for the 2026–30 USAG Optional Code of Points for applicable optional routines, alongside other current program cycles. Stickd is an analysis and training aid; meet scores remain official judge decisions.
